Hanson T5
Professional
Hanson T5
The first in our line of professional clarinets boasts ease of playing, great tuning and an evenness of tone across the range. Players will appreciate the expression afforded by the tapered tone holes and the naturally ages tonewoods produce a fantastic tone. The tonewoods selected for our T5 model Clarinets are aged naturally for at least six years before being carefully sculpted on our precise computer controlled machines. For your first truly professional level clarinet the Hanson T5 is a great choice and will serve you well for many, many years.

The wooden body of the T5 clarinet is naturally seasoned for a minimum of 6 years, and is often aged for almost double this amount of time. This beautifully seasoned wood goes for final sculpting using our purpose built computer controlled machine which boasts a repeatable accuracy of 6 microns (0.006mm!).
Our T5 Clarinet is aimed at those players looking for an introduction into the world of professional Clarinets. It is full of amazing features that you would usually only expect to find on an instrument with a price tag at least double of the T5, such as fine-tuned Blue Steel Springs, naturally seasoned tonewoods, choice of bore size to match your playing style, and many more.
As with all our professional level Clarinets, we take extra efforts to make sure we can give you an instrument that lasts. That’s why we trust only the best of Sheffield’s famous electroplaters to layer precious metals to the keys so that you can be sure they will last for many years whilst looking stunning.

About the Bore
The complex tapers of the bore will greatly affect the tone of your Clarinet as well as the tuning and the overall playing ‘feel’. This guide aims to help you find your perfect setup by going into the finer details of what the different bores do. Don’t forget to pair your clarinet to a matching design of mouthpiece for best results.

French Bore
- Medium bore (14.7mm) with a polycylindrical shape.
- Bright and focussed sound with excellent intonation.
- A great ‘all-rounder’.
A medium bore (14.7mm) clarinet based on popular designs from predominately French makers of the 20th century. Our ‘French bore’ clarinets have a superb focussed tone quality, somewhat brighter than the English bore instruments. A great ‘all-rounder’ equally at home in the orchestra, wind band, or jazz band for section players or soloists.
Famous ‘French bore’ clarinets include the Buffet R13 and Selmer 10G.

English Bore
- Large bore (15.3mm) with a polycylindrical shape.
- Dark, homogenous tone.
- Works best with a matching large bore mouthpiece.
A large bore (15.3mm) clarinet based on traditional designs from English makers of the 1950’s. Our ‘English bore’ clarinets have a broad homogenous tone, that is darker and less focussed than the smaller ‘French bore’ instruments. Favoured by Jazz and Symphonic players alike, this clarinet has a sound reminiscent of recordings from the big band era.
Famous ‘English bore’ clarinets include the Boosey and Hawkes 10-10, and similarly to the 10-10, our large bore clarinets play best when used with a matching large bore mouthpiece.

Symphony Bore
- Medium bore (14.65mm) with a longer taper to the top joint.
- Free blowing and excellent intonation.
- Works best with a large chamber and wide tip mouthpiece.
A medium bore (14.65mm) clarinet with a longer taper to the top joint. Particularly free blowing whilst retaining a very good focus to the tone and excellent intonation.
A favourite of section leaders and soloists and the most popular choice on our T6 and T7 models.

Jazz Bore
-
Large bore (14.9mm) with a conical dual taper shape.
- Bright, powerful and focussed tone.
- Works best with a large chamber and wide tip mouthpiece.
A large bore (14.9mm) clarinet with a longer tapered start and finish. This clarinet delivers a bright and powerful sound with good focus to the tone. It feels more open to play than the English or French bore models. Straighter tone holes give less possibilities for tuning individual notes and the good control is needed from the player to get the best out of this model. Make a statement with this instrument and don’t be shy. You will be noticed for all the right reasons!

About the Wood
The best material for your clarinet to be made from will depend on what kind of music you play, where you live and play, how you care for your clarinet and of course your preferred look and tone. Hanson were the first makers of woodwind instruments in the world to gain FSC accreditation. We are committed to ethical and responsible work practices and you can be sure that any materials we use are sourced responsible.
Grenadilla
- The traditional choice for quality woodwind instruments.
- Powerful and focussed tone.
- Our naturally seasoned Blackwood (aged up to 14 years) is very stable.
Also known as African Blackwood, MPingo and Dalbergia Melanoxylon – lots of names for the same wood! Depending on which country the harvesters live in the wood will be know by a different name. Grenadilla wood is the traditional material for the finest woodwind instruments. It is very dense and very dark in colour. The latin name gives us a clue that African Blackwood is actually a member of the rosewood family (Dalbergia). It is different from ebony; less brittle and with a more luxuriant finish. The best wood will be free of knots and imperfections and the grain will be straight, close and even. Some makers stain their clarinets to hide imperfections in the wood (they literally fill the knots and ‘paint’ the wood black!), but if you choose a Hanson clarinet you can trust that you will be able to see the grain, true beauty and quality of our wood.
Rosewood
- Beautiful wood grain.
- Softer and lighter tone.
- Our naturally seasoned Rosewood (aged up to 12 years) is very stable.
We use rosewoods (Dalbergia latifolia and Dalbergia retusa also known as Cocobolo) to make clarinets which produces some of the most beautiful instruments. Lighter in colour than blackwood and some will argue ‘lighter’ in sound. A good thing or a bad thing? Why not ask to try one? Rosewood clarinets are quite wonderful. Will a rosewood need more looking after?
Yes, and no… all clarinets should be cleaned out properly after playing, taking care to remove moisture especially from inside tenons. Your rosewood will look very special but not need more attention than your friends ‘ordinary’ instruments if they are all getting looked after properly. It may however get a great deal of attention from all who see it.
